Vidago Palace

Overview

Vidago Palace Hotel is a Belle Époque property set within a 110-hectare wooded park in northern Portugal. Opened in 1910, the palace retains its grand architecture, period interiors, decorative fabrics, dark-wood furnishings and Venetian-style chandeliers. The estate includes 70 rooms and suites, an 18-hole golf course, a thermal spa, restaurants, bars, and extensive leisure facilities.

Golf

The estate features an 18-hole, par-72 championship course measuring 6,308 metres from the white tees. Mackenzie Ross designed the original nine-hole course in 1936. Cameron & Powell later rebuilt and extended the course to 18 holes between 2006 and 2010.

The layout includes undulating greens, strategically positioned bunkers, ten par fours, four par fives and four par threes. Practice facilities include a driving range measuring over 300 metres and a pitching area. The Club House includes a restaurant, bar, pro shop, changing rooms, and a meeting room. Golf lessons, equipment hire, buggies and trolleys are available.

Accommodation

Vidago Palace has 70 rooms and suites across eight categories: Classic, Superior, Garden, Garden Deluxe, Privilege, Junior Suite, Suite 101 and Grand Suite.

Classic Rooms start at 22 square metres, while Grand Suites extend to 80 square metres. Room views include the surrounding park and mountains. Garden and Garden Deluxe Rooms occupy the ground floor and include private terraces. Selected suites provide separate living rooms, dressing areas and studies. One Garden Deluxe Room is adapted for guests with reduced mobility.

Dining

Menus are developed by Chef Vítor Matos, whose career includes two Michelin stars. The Grand Ballroom serves refined interpretations of traditional Northern Portuguese cuisine. The Wine Cellar pairs Portuguese and Spanish tapas with a broad selection of national and international wines.

The Winter Garden hosts breakfast beneath a large glass skylight. The Club House serves traditional Portuguese food in a relaxed golf setting. The Lobby Bar serves drinks, snacks, and light meals, while the Pool Bar operates during the high season.

Facilities

The 2,500-square-metre Thermal Spa was designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Facilities include treatment and thermal treatment rooms, two couples’ suites, Vichy showers, relaxation areas, indoor and outdoor pools, a vitality pool and a Matrix-equipped gym. Treatments feature Clarins, Aromatherapy Associates and Vidago thermal waters.

Elsewhere across the estate are one tennis court, two padel courts, a Kids Club and landscaped parkland. The Conference Centre provides seven meeting rooms, a multipurpose room and a 264-seat auditorium.

Location

Vidago Palace stands in Vidago, close to Chaves in northern Portugal. The hotel sits among mature woodland, walking paths, gardens and historic thermal springs. Chaves is around 15 minutes away by road, while the Douro Valley is approximately 30 minutes from the estate.
